Strength in Unity

IES Virginia provides relief following Hurricane Helene

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation, communities in North Carolina were left to rebuild. But even in their darkest hour, kindness and support shone through.

According to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in western North Carolina, caused approximately $53 billion in direct and indirect damages. “It is no exaggeration to describe Helene as the deadliest and most damaging storm to ever hit North Carolina” said Gov. Cooper to press officials during a conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.

With historic levels of flooding and land-sliding, causing damage to 160 water and sewer systems, 6,000 miles of roadway, and an estimated 126,000 homes, IES Virginia jumped at the opportunity to support our neighbors in need (The Associated Press).

Early, on a Sunday morning, IES members gathered to assemble hygiene kits for those displaced and disadvantaged. The effort resulted in a substantial collection of essential items including, but not limited to, hairbrushes, combs, deodorant, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, bug spray, shampoo and conditioner, body soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and three pallets loaded with cases of water.

After sorting almost 18,000 items into personal care packages, the supplies were loaded onto an IES truck and transported to North Carolina. “In the aftermath of a natural disaster, our true strength is revealed in how we come together to uplift those in need,” says Michelle Warwick, AP Manager who helped to organize the effort.

As North Carolina continues to rebuild, IES Electrical extends our heartfelt sympathy to those affected by disaster.
